Hoatzins arrive at the Ruku Samay lagoon

A historic moment for our community and for the Amazon rainforest
We are delighted to announce the arrival of five hoatzins (Opisthocomus hoazin) at our Ruku Samay Lagoon project. This event marks a milestone on our journey of restoring and protecting the Amazon ecosystem.
The hoatzin is not just a bird: it is a living symbol of natural balance, a guardian of wetlands and a reminder of the deep connection between the rainforest and the people who live in it.
Why is the hoatzin so exceptional?
It is a unique species in the world, with characteristics no other bird has.
Its purely plant-based diet and fermenting digestion make it a direct indicator of ecosystem health.
It lives in tropical forests, on riverbanks and in flooded areas — exactly the kind of environment we are restoring at Ruku Samay.
Its presence shows that the ecosystem is regaining its natural balance.
It helps the forest regenerate by spreading seeds and enriching the soil.
It is part of the food chain and supports the presence of natural predators such as snakes and birds of prey.
It is deeply valued in the indigenous cosmovision.
The arrival of the hoatzins confirms that our work so far is paying off. Although the lagoon is not finished yet, this progress shows we are heading in the right direction.
Our goal is to create a place where:
- Animals can find shelter, breed and thrive.
- Native flora can regain its strength and diversity.
- Local communities can learn, share and reconnect with the rainforest.
- Indigenous culture can be honoured and strengthened.
The hoatzins are just the beginning. Their arrival motivates us to keep protecting the local rainforest.
